What Is Tenax Solido?

A polyester mastic for bonding, filling and repairing stone.

Tenax Solido is a polyester-based stone adhesive, produced by Tenax in Italy. Fabricators reach for it to glue stone to stone, close a seam, pack a chip and fill the natural voids that some slabs turn up with.

Two parts go into it. Hardener is stirred through the mastic right before use, and what follows is a chemical cure rather than drying, which is how it ends up hard enough to sand and polish flush with the stone around it.

People ask for it as Tenax Mastic, or simply as Tenax and a color. We keep black, white and transparent on the shelf in Iloilo City, and which one you pick matters more than most customers expect.

Everything else on the care shelf treats a finished surface. Solido is the exception: it is a material, and its job is putting the stone together in the first place.

What Is Tenax Solido Used For?

Four jobs, and most of them happen during fabrication.

Bonding stone to stone

Laminated edges come up most often. Stick two layers of 18 mm slab together and the profile reads as 36 mm, with Solido doing the holding. Mitered corners work the same way.

Closing seams

An L-shaped or U-shaped kitchen has to have a seam somewhere, and the mastic packs and color-matches that join. It is why a well-made counter shows its seams close up and hides them from across the room.

Filling chips

Chips at an edge or a cutout get filled, cured and sanded flush. Color runs through the full thickness of natural stone, so a filled chip vanishes far better there than on a material with a printed pattern.

Filling natural voids

Small pits and fissures arrive in some slabs as a matter of course rather than as a defect. They are packed and polished during fabrication, which is why the finished counter looks more even than the raw slab did.

How Do You Apply Tenax Solido?

Mix small, because the clock starts the moment you do.

1

Clean and Dry the Surfaces

Dust, sealer and grease all get in the way of a bond. Clean the faces being joined, let them dry right through, and hold off sealing a repair area until the fill has cured.

2

Mix Only What You Will Use

Add hardener to a small quantity and stir it thoroughly. Curing begins as soon as it is catalysed, so work in batches you can place inside the working time rather than making up the whole job at once.

3

Overfill, Then Sand Back

Pack the repair a touch proud of the surface, let it cure right through, then sand and polish it level. Fill it flush and you get a dip once it shrinks, and a dip catches the eye faster than a color mismatch.

Solido is one of the stone care products we keep on the shelf in Iloilo City, in three colors so a repair can match the slab. Ask at the counter in Iloilo.

Can You Repair a Chip Yourself?

Yes. Small ones, with patience.

Yes. A small chip at an edge or beside a sink is a fair job for a careful homeowner. Clean it out, mix a little mastic in the nearest color, overfill, wait for the cure, then sand and polish it back.

Hang on to the fragment if it is still around. A piece that has come away cleanly can sometimes be glued back rather than filled, and a rebonded fragment matches perfectly for the obvious reason that it is the same stone.

Scale is the honest limit. Something the size of a fingernail is a home job. A broken corner, a cracked slab or damage around a cutout belongs to a fabricator, and having a go yourself usually makes the professional repair harder.

Repolishing and restoration are not services Stone Depot offers. We sell the material; the work is yours or your fabricator to do.

Will the Repair Be Invisible?

No. Close, on the right stone, at the right distance.

No. What you have is a color-matched patch of resin set into a piece of natural stone. Standing over a busy granite you will not see it. Under a downlight at close range, on a plain surface, you will.

Repairs hide best in busy stone. A coarse mottle such as Salt and Pepper or Tiger Orange swallows a fill whole. Something near-plain like Absolute Black offers it nowhere to hide.

Veined stone is the awkward one. A chip crossing a vein means matching the ground and the vein together, and the mastic comes in three colors rather than an infinite number. Expect a compromise.

Settle your expectations before you begin. Ninety percent invisible is a good result on natural stone, and a long way better than living with the chip.

Solido vs Our Other Stone Care Products

The only one that is a material rather than a treatment.

Solido builds and repairs

From ₱1,600, in three colors. Bond, seam, fill and repair with it. Nothing else here adds material to the stone instead of treating what is already there.

Proseal protects countertops

Tenax Proseal at ₱4,600 repels oil and water from inside the pores. Seal once a repair has cured, never before, or the mastic will not take hold.

Hydrex protects walls and floors

Tenax Hydrex at ₱3,500 repels water, for cladding, flooring and outdoor stone.

Cera Fluida finishes the surface

Tenax Cera Fluida at ₱3,500 deepens color and adds sheen. Worth remembering after a repair, since a wax can help a filled patch settle into the stone around it.

Which Color Should You Choose?

Match the ground, not the pattern.

Pick against the dominant background color of the slab rather than against a vein or a fleck. The ground is what the eye reads on a grained stone, and matching a black fleck in a white granite leaves you with a dark dot.

Black goes with the dark granites, so Absolute Black, Black Galaxy, Tan Brown and the darker Sapphire quartz. White goes with pale whites and grays, Caesar White, Moonstone and the Calacatta quartz range among them.

Warm neutrals such as Marigold, Beige Porrino and Crema Marfil sit between the two, so bring a photograph and the Iloilo counter will say which of the three works best against your slab.

Transparent is for seams in veined or translucent stone, where any solid color would read as a line. It is the hardest of the three to use well, since it takes on whatever color sits behind it, so test on an offcut first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Tenax Solido the same as Tenax Mastic?

Yes. Customers ask for Tenax Mastic, Tenax White, Tenax Black, or just Tenax and a color. It is all the same polyester stone adhesive, stocked in black, white and transparent.

Which color should I buy for my counter?

Match the dominant background color of the slab, not a vein or a fleck. Black for dark granites, white for pale whites and grays, transparent for seams in veined stone. Bring a photograph to the Iloilo counter if you are unsure.

Can I fix a chip myself?

A small one, yes. Clean it out, mix a little mastic in the nearest color, overfill, cure, then sand and polish it level. Broken corners, cracks and damage around a cutout are fabricator work.

Will the repair be invisible?

Close, but not perfect. Busy flecked stone hides a fill almost entirely; near-plain surfaces and veined stone give it away under direct light. Ninety percent invisible is a good result on natural stone.

Can I use it on engineered quartz?

Yes, and fabricators do, for seams and edges. A repair shows more on a plain quartz design than on natural stone, because the color is perfectly uniform and no pattern breaks the fill up.

Do I seal before or after a repair?

After. Sealer across the repair area stops the mastic bonding properly. Fill first, cure fully, sand and polish, then seal the whole surface in one go.

How long does it take to cure?

Hours, once the hardener is in. The cure is chemical rather than a drying process, so working time is short. Mix small batches you can place before it goes off, and check the tin for current figures.
