This is the single thing customers get wrong most often. Porosity is a property of the individual stone, and it takes no notice of whether a slab reads light or dark.
Needs sealing
Most granites, Salt and Pepper, River White, Paradiso Dark, Gray Honda and Black Impala among them. Every marble and every onyx as well, and travertine wherever it is laid.
Needs no sealing at all
All engineered quartz, with no exceptions, since the resin binder gives a sealer nothing to sink into. On the granite side, Absolute Black, Black Galaxy, Tan Brown and Marigold.
Why the rule of thumb fails
Marigold is a light brown and asks for nothing. Gray Honda and Paradiso Dark are both dark and both want sealing. Anyone who tells you dark stone never needs a sealer, without first asking which stone, has not looked it up.
How to settle it on your own counter
Put three or four drops of water somewhere out of sight and walk away for 15 minutes. Stone that has gone darker underneath is drinking the water and wants sealing. Water still standing in beads, wiping away clean, means leave it be.
